Key Takeaways

  • Muse Spark is the model behind Meta AI. "Meta Muse" is a family name: Muse Spark writes, Muse Image makes pictures, Muse Code writes software, and Muse is a separate agent app.

  • It's free to try. Meta AI runs on Muse Spark in the Meta AI app and on meta.ai, with a Facebook or Instagram login.

  • It's good at short, playful work. Brainstorming, constrained writing, song lyrics and in-character dialogue are its strengths.

  • It's weaker on long manuscripts. Reviewers report weak long-context reasoning, and Meta doesn't market it for fiction.

  • Mind the privacy settings. Meta uses Meta AI conversations to personalize ads in most countries, so don't paste in work you'd rather keep to yourself.

What "Meta Muse" actually is

Meta's AI lab launched Muse Spark in April 2026 as the model behind Meta AI, replacing the Llama models that had run it before. Unlike Llama, its weights aren't public. Meta has since updated it several times, and version 1.1 reached the Meta AI app and meta.ai in July.

The Muse name now covers more than one product. Muse Image generates pictures, Muse Code is a coding agent, and in September Meta launched Muse, a standalone personal agent app in the US. For writers, the one that matters is Muse Spark inside the Meta AI assistant, which is what this piece covers. It's also not the same thing as Sudowrite's fiction model, which happens to be called Muse too.

Where you can use it, and what it costs

The simplest route is the Meta AI app or meta.ai, signed in with a Facebook or Instagram account. Meta AI is also built into WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, which is handy for quick ideas but awkward for real drafting. The assistant is free, and you can switch between an Instant mode for quick replies and a Thinking mode that reasons before answering.

Developers and writing-app builders can reach Muse Spark through Meta's Model API, which launched in public preview in July with a context window of 1 million tokens. Meta hasn't published a context limit for the consumer app.

What it's good at

Brainstorming. Like any capable chatbot, Muse Spark is quick at the early work: alternative titles, ten ways a scene could end, a list of names that fit a setting, or the questions a skeptical editor would ask about your premise. Thinking mode helps when you want it to reason through a plot problem rather than just list options.

Constrained and playful writing. In TechRadar's hands-on test, Muse Spark wrote a song without the letter "e" and got it right, and held up well in a funny in-character exchange. That fits Meta's social setting: it's built for short, conversational, entertaining output.

Dialogue and character voices. Roleplaying a character is a decent way to find their voice before you write them. Ask Muse Spark to answer as your antagonist, then interview them.

Working from images. You can share a photo in the app and ask for a scene, a poem or a setting description based on it, which is useful for prompts and mood boards.

How it compares

When Muse Spark launched, LMArena, which ranks models by blind head-to-head votes, placed it ninth in its creative writing category and 12th in writing and literature. That's competitive, though short of the top. Third-party trackers of the same leaderboard have shown it slipping since, as newer models from OpenAI, Google and Anthropic arrived.

Reviewers describe its prose as correct but plain. If you want a distinctive voice on the first try, the frontier chatbots that lead those rankings, or a fiction-specific tool, are better starting points. Muse Spark's advantage is that it's free and already in apps you have open.

Where it falls short

Long manuscripts. Meta itself acknowledges gaps in long, multi-step work, and an independent review of version 1.1 found weak long-context reasoning and a high rate of made-up details. Don't rely on it to keep a novel's continuity straight across chapters.

No writing-specific features. Meta's announcements focus on health, shopping, coding and agents. There's no manuscript workspace, story bible or style memory built for writers, as dedicated fiction tools have.

Unclear rules for mature themes. Meta hasn't published content guidelines specific to fiction. Expect it to refuse some scenes that dark or adult fiction needs, and don't plan a project around it until you've tested your genre.

Privacy for writers

This is the part to read before pasting in a draft. Since December 16, 2025, Meta has used conversations with Meta AI to personalize ads across its apps, with no opt-out outside the EU, the UK and South Korea. The Meta AI app's Discover feed, which in 2025 exposed chats people didn't realize were public, has since been removed, though Instagram may still tell your friends that you use the app.

In practice, Muse Spark is fine for brainstorming and exercises. For unpublished manuscripts, client work or anything personal, use a tool with clearer data controls.

Who it's for

  • Good fit: writers who want a free brainstorming partner, songwriters and poets playing with form, and anyone who already lives in WhatsApp or Instagram and wants quick ideas there.

  • Poor fit: novelists who need help with a full manuscript, writers of dark or adult fiction, and anyone protective of unpublished work.
