Key Takeaways
Best overall: FreshBooks. Invoicing, time tracking, project budgets and mileage on every plan, with proposals and receipt capture on Plus.
Best for tax time: QuickBooks Solopreneur. Mileage tracking, Schedule C categories and a TurboTax discount, with a free tier to start.
Best free invoicing: Wave. Unlimited invoices and estimates for free; you pay only when clients pay by card.
Best for setting money aside for taxes: Found. Free business banking that estimates and sets aside your taxes automatically.
AND.CO is gone. Fiverr's free freelancer tool shut down on March 1, 2026, so if you were using it, it's time to move.
What freelance creatives actually need
Most freelance creatives don't need full double-entry accounting on day one. They need to send professional invoices and get paid, track expenses and mileage without a shoebox of receipts, and know how much to set aside for quarterly estimated taxes.
As the business grows, client paperwork starts to matter too: proposals, contracts and time tracking for hourly jobs. Some apps here are accounting tools first, others are client-management tools with money features attached. Pick the one that matches where your time actually goes.
How we picked
Getting paid. Invoices, online payments and their fees, reminders and client limits.
Expenses and taxes. Bank feeds, receipt capture, mileage and help with estimated taxes.
Client work. Proposals, contracts, time tracking and project budgets.
Price. Free tiers and what the cheapest useful plan includes. We checked each vendor's pricing page on October 18, 2026. This isn't tax advice; check with an accountant for your situation.

1. FreshBooks - the best overall
FreshBooks fits the way most freelance creatives work. Every plan includes unlimited invoices and estimates, time tracking, project budgets and mobile mileage tracking, and the Plus plan adds proposals, retainers, e-signatures, automatic receipt capture and bank reconciliation (FreshBooks).
The Lite plan caps you at five billable clients, and proposals and receipt capture need Plus. Card payments cost 2.9% plus 30 cents.
Best for: Designers and illustrators who bill by the project or the hour.
Invoicing and payments: Unlimited invoices; cards 2.9% + $0.30, ACH 1%.
Price: Lite $23 a month, Plus $43; frequent introductory discounts. As of October 2026.

2. QuickBooks Solopreneur - the best for tax time
Intuit's solopreneur plans are built around tax season. They sort income and expenses into Schedule C categories, track mileage automatically with your phone's GPS and bundle a discount on TurboTax federal filing (QuickBooks).
The free tier is tight, with two invoices a month (unlimited if you use QuickBooks Payments), five mileage trips and two receipt uploads, and there's no time tracking, proposals or contracts. Intuit's plan names have changed often, which makes comparing them confusing.
Best for: Freelancers whose biggest headache is taxes rather than client paperwork.
Invoicing and payments: Unlimited invoices on paid plans.
Price: Free tier; Lite $20 a month, Simple Start $38, with introductory discounts. As of October 2026.

3. Wave - the best free invoicing
Wave's free Starter plan gives you unlimited invoices and estimates; you pay only when clients pay by card. The Pro plan adds automatic bank imports, unlimited receipt capture, payment reminders and lower fees on your first 10 card payments each month (Wave).
There are no bank feeds on the free plan, no mileage or time tracking, and the fixed 60-cent card fee adds up on small invoices.
Best for: New freelancers who want professional invoices without a subscription.
Invoicing and payments: Unlimited invoices; cards 2.9% + $0.60.
Price: Free Starter; Pro $19 a month or $190 a year. As of October 2026.

4. Found - the best for setting money aside for taxes
Found combines a free business bank account with bookkeeping. It categorizes expenses automatically, captures receipts, tracks mileage and home-office costs, estimates your taxes and sets money aside for them, and includes unlimited invoices (Found).
You have to bank with Found for it to work, and there's no time tracking or proposals. Paying quarterly taxes from the app and importing outside accounts need the Plus plan.
Best for: Freelancers who want taxes handled in the background.
Invoicing and payments: Unlimited invoices.
Price: Free; Plus $35 a month. As of October 2026.

5. HoneyBook - the best client experience
HoneyBook is a client-management tool first, popular with photographers. Invoices, proposals, contracts and payments are on every plan, and it has added expense tracking, profit by project, a cash-flow planner and a Tax Hub.
It isn't full accounting, its pricing page lists no mileage or time tracking, and ACH payments cost 1.5%. QuickBooks Online sync starts on Essentials.
Best for: Photographers and creative studios who want booking, contracts and payments in one place.
Invoicing and payments: Invoices and payments on every plan; ACH 1.5%.
Price: Starter $29 a month billed yearly; Essentials $49. As of October 2026.

6. Bonsai - proposals, contracts and invoices in one
Bonsai covers the client side of freelancing: proposals, contracts, invoicing, expenses and time tracking, with QuickBooks and Xero sync on higher plans (Bonsai). Zoom announced it was acquiring Bonsai in November 2025.
It isn't real accounting, the entry Basic plan covers only time tracking and projects, and invoicing and contracts start on Essentials.
Best for: Freelancers who send lots of proposals and contracts.
Invoicing and payments: Invoicing from Essentials.
Price: Basic $15 a month, Essentials $25, lower with annual billing. As of October 2026.

7. Zoho Books - a free plan with real books
Zoho Books' free plan, for businesses under $50,000 in yearly revenue, includes invoicing, quotes, online payments, mileage, receipt scanning and accountant access (Zoho).
Bank feeds start on the Standard plan, and time tracking and projects on Professional.
Best for: Freelancers who want proper books for free while they're small.
Invoicing and payments: Invoices and online payments on the free plan.
Price: Free under $50,000 revenue; Standard $20 a month. As of October 2026.

Tips for keeping your freelance books clean
Open a separate account. Keeping business money apart from personal spending makes everything else easier.
Snap receipts as you go. Catching up in April is how deductions get lost.
Set aside for taxes every time you're paid. A fixed share of each payment into a tax account avoids a quarterly scramble.
Invoice the day the work is done. The longer you wait, the longer you wait to get paid.
